Etymology and Origin:

 • 📜 It comes from the Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which states:

“No person […] shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself…”

 • So when someone says “I plead the Fifth”, they’re invoking their constitutional right to not answer a question that might reveal their own guilt.
